Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
